Study in the U.S. – Our Fulbright Lecture with Prof. Dr. Dirk Oschmann in Leipzig

On April 16, 2024, Fulbright Germany, in cooperation with the German-American Institute Saxony and Leipzig University Library, hosted a Fulbright Lecture at the historic Bibliotheca Albertina.
The evening centered around Prof. Dr. Dirk Oschmann – Fulbright alumnus, author, and professor of literature at Leipzig University – who offered pointed reflections on his own study and research experience in the United States. He shared how this formative time abroad has left a lasting impact on both his academic and personal development.
The event began with welcome remarks by Eric Fraunholz, Executive Director of the German-American Institute Saxony, and Hakan Tosuner, Executive Director of Fulbright Germany. Both speakers underscored the value of international exchange, dialogue, and long-term partnerships–especially in times of global uncertainty.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Dr. Anne Lipp, Director of the Bibliotheca Albertina, for her generous hospitality at this remarkable venue, a true space of knowledge and connection. Fulbright alumnus and U.S. Consul General in Leipzig, John Crosby, also shared personal impressions from his own Fulbright journey, speaking about the enduring power of education, empathy, and exchange.

The event was thoughtfully moderated by Fulbright alumna Christine Coester, who guided the audience through the evening with insight and warmth–drawing from her own exchange experience to frame the program’s spirit of transatlantic understanding.
Following the lecture, a Study Abroad Forum gave interested students the opportunity to learn about scholarships and funding opportunities for study and research stays in the U.S. Many thanks to our on-site partners–ArbeiterKind.de, the DAAD, the German-American Institute Saxony, the International Office of Leipzig University, and the Parliamentary Partnership Program (PPP)–whose support made this information fair possible.

This lecture was not only an academic highlight but also a reflection of Fulbright Germany’s growing engagement in Eastern Germany. Here, we continue to build and strengthen networks to foster lasting and meaningful transatlantic dialogue.

Because a Fulbright grant is much more than an academic exchange — it is a life-changing experience that opens global perspectives, promotes personal growth, and creates friendships across borders.
