The 2025 German Programs Welcome Weekend in Berlin Was a Great Success

From May 2–4, 2025, we held this year’s Fulbright Germany Welcome Weekend for our German program participants in Berlin – a special event that annually opens up new perspectives and valuable networks.
Around 220 designated Fulbright grantees for 2025–26 from various programs (Study Grants, Travel Grants, Foreign Language Assistants, PhD students, Scholars) gathered to prepare for their upcoming stay in the United States. A special thanks to our wonderful guests, speakers, our current US grantees from Berlin, and our dedicated alumni, who were available as resource contacts for our new Fulbrighters at any time.
Our Program – Full of Highlights and Inspiring Encounters
This year’s opening event was a resounding success, featuring a diverse program with exciting insights and many opportunities for networking.
After a warm welcome from the Fulbright team, together with Dr. Anke Bösel, Head of Programs and Deputy Director at Fulbright Germany, the event kicked off with a regional networking session, where the new grantees had the opportunity to connect with one another.

A special highlight was the festive evening reception, with inspiring speeches by:
- Hakan Tosuner, Executive Director, Fulbright Germany
- Robert Greenan, Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs, US Embassy Berlin
- Christina Gehlsen, Head of International Science Policy Department, Federal Foreign Office
- Peter Greisler, Head of the Higher Education Department, Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

An emotional moment was the keynote address by Dagmar Hovestädt, Fulbright alumna, author, and moderator, who shared deeply personal insights into her transatlantic Fulbright experience.

The next day continued with alumni panels, where the new cohort’s many questions were addressed. During the interactive workshop by LEAD Forward on the topic of Act Fulbright – led by Fulbright alumni Andreas Drexler (formerly Dewald) and Stephanie Feser – it became clear: Fulbright is more than just a scholarship – Act Fulbright is a contribution to enriching transatlantic relations.
The evening was dedicated to the legendary Fulbright party, featuring an exciting Talent Show, where singing, dancing, and creative performances generated a lot of excitement. Those still with energy could extend the night with more conversations, music, and plenty of Fulbright spirit.
The next day was once again creative: In an Unconference session, participants brainstormed about their expectations, goals, and ideas for their time in the USA. It was also enriching to hear from the Alumni Association, whose representatives shared their experiences and encouraged everyone to pursue their own path with curiosity and openness.
We reflect on an intense, warm, and inspiring orientation meeting – and we are excited for all that lies ahead. The Fulbright adventure can now begin!
